Types of Chinese traditional costumes
Cheongsam
Traditional Chinese clothing is the traditional costume of the Chinese people and is regarded as the national treasure of China and the representative of Chinese costume, a valuable treasure created by the Chinese nation and human society.
Chinese costume has a long history, from primitive societies, from ancient times to modern times, and is noted for its distinctive features, mainly the Hanfu, but also other distinctive costumes of various nationalities such as the Tibetan robe, all with rich connotations of meaning and ethnic characteristics.
Nowadays, the People's Republic of China officially recognises 55 different minority nationalities in addition to the Han nationality. Traditional Chinese costumes therefore also include the various costumes worn by members of China's different minority nationalities. Many of these minority costume styles are still widely used today, especially in rural areas.
The Hanfu is a representative of traditional Chinese clothing, carrying the Han people's dyeing, weaving and embroidery, outstanding craftsmanship and aesthetics, and carrying on more than 30 Chinese intangible cultural heritages as well as protected Chinese arts and crafts. And as history has changed, each dynasty has also had different forms of Han Chinese costume.
The cheongsam is well known to the public since the 1980s. The cheongsam has a long history, but its origins and timing are still debated in academic circles. The cheongsam, as it is now known to the public, is a modified version from the Republican period. The cheongsam has deep cultural significance and is a traditional dress for Chinese women in China and around the world, as well as being a national treasure of China. The cheongsam appears as ceremonial dress for many large international conferences, diplomatic occasions, and international events. The cheongsam was also included in the list of China's national level intangible cultural heritage in 2011.
As for China's minority nationalities, different natural environments, different religious beliefs and different customs make up a complex and rich ecological tribe, which also creates different and colourful costume arts.
Tibetan Nationalities:
The Tibetan nationality is mainly distributed in the Tibet Autonomous Region and in the provinces of Sichuan, Qinghai and Yunnan. Most of the Tibetan people believe in Tibetan Buddhism, and their dress is mainly marked by bold and atmospheric, intricate stripes and bright colours. Excavated artefacts show that the indigenous inhabitants of the Tibetan plateau already had a high aesthetic sensibility 4,000 to 5,000 years ago, not only with bone needles for sewing clothes, but also with white jade and jewellery that could only be created with a certain aesthetic sense.
